Description
Susumelle (or susamelle) are oval-shaped sweets typical of the Calabrian tradition, with very ancient origins (they were introduced by the Saracens). They have a warmly spiced flavour, as they are scented with cloves and cinnamon and sweetened with honey and sultanas. The real treat, however, is their coating: a generous layer of dark chocolate that makes them crunchy on the outside and deliciously soft inside. In the past they were prepared for Saint Martin’s Day, when new wine was first opened, but today you can find them in pastry shops all year round.
